shipped experience

To support translations, 3 core experiences needed to be built: feature opt-in during the publishing flow, review and approvals, and viewer-side consumption.

publishing flow

Integration into reels publishing

AI translations were added to the reels publishing composer, enabling creators to opt-in, if their original content was in a supported language.

Creator controls

Creators were given the option to selectively remove languages, add lip syncing to the video, and force a review process before translations were made public.

review and approval flow

Entrypoints to review

Notifications were created to notify creators when their translations were ready for review. An entry point was also created when viewing one’s own reel.

Review and approval

Creators could switch between languages in a mini viewer mode before choosing to approve or delete.

viewer-side experience

Translation affordance

Meta text in the attribution line was added to indicate to viewers that they were seeing AI-translated content.

Controls

A second milestone of work leveraged the entry point to let users control whether or not they saw translated content and/or choose to hear specific languages in the original audio.

reels playlists

Enabling viewers to discover related content from the same author and increase creator video impressions.

To support playlists, 3 core experiences needed to be built: feature opt-in during the publishing flow, management, and viewer-side consumption.

publishing flow

Integration into reels publishing

Playlists were added to the reels publishing composer, enabling creators to add a reel to a new or existing playlist at the point of publish.

viewer-side experience

Playlist bar

A bar indicating that a given reel is part of a playlist was added to the reels viewer. The bar enabled a “View next” CTA when the user neared video completion to immediately start playlist chaining.

Playlist browsing

Tapping on the bar enabled viewers to start a chaining experience of other content in the playlist.
